Important Immigration News: IRS and ICE Agreement & New USCIS Policy on Antisemitism

Recent changes in U.S. immigration policy are raising concerns for immigrant communities. These changes involve tax filings and the review of social media activity, which could impact individuals applying for immigration benefits or currently in the process.

IRS and ICE Agreement: What It Means for Immigrants Who File Taxes

A new agreement between the IRS and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) allows ICE to request taxpayer information from the IRS for individuals under investigation or facing deportation orders. This is a shift from the previous separation between tax enforcement and immigration enforcement, which allowed undocumented immigrants to file taxes using Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers (ITINs) without fear of deportation. Now, some immigrants worry that their tax information could be used against them in immigration cases. This could discourage some from filing taxes, which may harm their immigration cases and expose them to legal risks.

USCIS New Policy on Antisemitism: Impact on Immigration Applications

Starting April 9, 2025, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will consider antisemitic activity on social media and physical harassment of Jewish individuals when reviewing immigration benefits. This includes individuals applying for permanent resident status, foreign students, and those linked to educational institutions with antisemitic actions. USCIS will also review social media for support of antisemitic terrorism or violent ideologies related to groups like Hamas or Hezbollah. If applicants have such activity in their background, their cases may be delayed or denied.
