The Kindness of Strangers

As we continue to navigate the complexities of immigration law, I am constantly reminded of the kindness that exists in the world—particularly the kindness of strangers. Time and time again, we witness people stepping up to help those they barely know, often making life-changing differences for others. This quarter, I want to share a few instances that have touched me and, I hope, will inspire you as well.

One such story involves a remarkable CEO, a woman managing several successful companies, who learned that her son’s college friend had lost his financial aid after his immigration application was denied. Busy as she was with her own business and personal obligations, she did not hesitate to reach out for help on his behalf. After we screened him, we discovered he was eligible for a green card through VAWA. Without a second thought, she offered to cover all legal fees, but her generosity didn’t stop there—she also began helping with his tuition. What stands out most to me is how closely she remained involved in the process, asking questions, ensuring that every detail was taken care of, and keeping everyone informed of next steps. Despite her demanding schedule, her compassion and willingness to help someone she barely knew shone through.

In another instance, we were approached by a business owner who had learned that one of his partners had been assassinated by the Taliban. The weight of that loss was heavy, but instead of feeling powerless, he decided to act. This business owner not only helped the family of his late partner escape Afghanistan, but he also paid for all of their immigration applications so that the widow and children could start anew in the U.S. His actions gave that family hope and safety in the midst of unimaginable tragedy.

A final example that reflects the recurring generosity we see in our practice involves a client who connected us with their nanny, wondering if we might be able to help with her immigration status. After conducting a thorough review, we found she was eligible for a green card through a humanitarian method. Without hesitation, her employer offered to cover all the costs. What struck me was how naturally this kindness unfolded—no questions asked, just a quiet determination to help someone in need.

two hands joining together

These are just a few of the stories we encounter on a regular basis. The truth is, the goodness of people is not often showcased, but we see it here, in our practice, every day. There’s something incredibly moving about witnessing how strangers—people with no obligation to act—rise to meet the needs of others. It reminds me of the resilience and generosity that bind us together as a community.

As we reflect on these acts of kindness, let us be inspired. May we remember that even small actions can make a profound difference in the lives of others. In a world that can sometimes feel divided, these stories remind us of our shared humanity.

I am humbled by the kindness of strangers, and I hope this letter brings a sense of hope and inspiration to you as well.
