USCIS Extends Green Card Renewal Validity to 36 Months

Starting September 10, 2024, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) now extends the validity of Permanent Resident Cards (Green Cards) to 36 months for individuals who file Form I-90, Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card. This change helps lawful permanent residents (LPRs) maintain proof of status and work authorization while they wait for their new Green Card. Previously, Form I-90 receipt notices provided a 24-month extension.

This updated policy applies to LPRs renewing expiring or expired Green Cards. USCIS is issuing new receipt notices that extend the validity of Green Cards for 36 months from the expiration date. For individuals with pending I-90 applications, USCIS began issuing updated receipt notices on September 10, 2024.

These receipt notices, when presented with an expired Green Card, act as proof of continued LPR status and work authorization. The 36-month extension is intended to ease the burden on applicants facing longer processing times.

If you no longer have your Green Card and need proof of status while waiting for a replacement, you can request an appointment at a USCIS Field Office to get an Alien Documentation, Identification, and Telecommunications (ADIT) stamp after filing Form I-90.
